We are finalizing our Mayday Success Stories calendar and are looking for a printer to donate services or local businesses to sponsor.
Pit Bull Awareness Day is fast approaching. We are seeking donations of goods and/or services for the raffle or silent auction. Donated items directly benefit the dogs in our care.
When we took little Brooklyn in she was paralyzed from the neck down due to lesion on her spine caused by Valley Fever. There was a chance that she would never walk again. But this little fighter showed us she was not ready to give up. With the help of medication, she was finally able to walk and she hasn't looked back since. She continued to get stronger and stronger and now looks and acts like any other healthy, happy puppy. But up until recently, she had still been reliant on steroids to help her walk. We tried to taper her off on several occasions but each time she regressed back into semi-paralysis.
We are now happy to report that we have successfully tapered Brooklyn off of the prednisone. She has been prednisone free for over 60 days now with no change in her functioning. In fact, she has continued to gain strength and mobility. This is such a huge step for her. Staying on the Prednisone would have eventually caused damage to her organs. Also, now that she is off of the medication, she can get spayed which puts her one step closer to being adoptable. This little girl has been an inspiration to us since the moment we saw her beautiful face and she teaches us lessons about strength and perseverance every day.
Bridget Update
Believe it or not, Bridget is now a year old! When we first heard her diagnosis of a severe and inoperable heart condition, we wondered if she would see her first birthday. But she showed us that she was not ready to let a broken heart stand in her way. She has been a healthy, playful, active puppy just like any other. She did suffer a recent setback. She had a fainting episode. This type of problem often happens in dogs with her condition. It is similar to a seizure and can result in death. Due to that episode, we took Bridget back to the cardiologist for another echocardiogram and we are pleased to say the results were positive overall. Although there is no cure for her condition, there has only been minimal progression in the damage to her heart. Her heart is still relatively strong and has actually improved in some ways since she has aged and her heart has grown larger and better able to manage the faulty valve. The fainting episodes can likely be controlled very well with medication and we are all hopeful that this special little girl has many, many years ahead of her!
For the second year in a row, this amazing girl has shown her dedication to saving pit bulls by giving up her own birthday gifts and instead asking for donations to Mayday Pit Bull Rescue. This year she raised $86!! These funds will go a long way toward helping dogs in need. We can't thank Parker enough for her generosity! At a young age she is already changing the world for the better.
